GECOM must correct the incorrect information on Commissioners’ pay
DEAR EDITOR,
Quite recently, in a letter to the editor, I advocated for media houses to do a fact check before reporting or publishing. My recommendation, therefore, was caused by the numerous cases that Freddie Kissoon’s column, in Kaieteur News, misrepresented verifiable information as malicious or malicious; and was unresponsive to factual corrections.
There was an article headed Kaieteur News on January 14: “GECOM Commissioners pocket $ 450,000 every month even if they walk out of meetings”. The article’s content stated that the approximate “after-tax” monthly salary is $ 450,000. This information is inaccurate by tens of thousands and highlights editorial issues beyond Freddie Kissoon’s misinformation and misrepresentation diet.
I am therefore consolidated in my call for fact checks. Any such further occurrence, of inaccurate information being fed into the public, will only lead to one of two possible conclusions leading to professional incompetence or lack of intent.
It is also my sincere hope that GECOM finds it prudent to correct the inaccurate information, referred to above, with the same alacrity of its response to the Press Release of three of its commissioners, having withdrawn back from meeting January 12, 2021.
Truly,
Vincent Alexander
GECOM Commissioner
