Kaieteur News – Two weeks since her death at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), four-day-old parents, Aklima Mohamed, is optimistic that when they meet these hospital officials, they will have answers now as it relates to her death a week.
According to the Communications Manager at the GPHC, Ms Chelauna Providence, the head of the hospital’s investigation team holds the baby’s post mortem examination report and is in the process of completing the investigation. In light of this development, he said the child’s parents will be called in this week to discuss the findings of the investigation.
Little Aklima was born last March 4 and had died on March 7 at the medical facility.
The dead baby’s mother, Stephanie Burnett, had told this publication that after giving birth she had been assured by the doctor that she was safe and that the baby was healthy. However, the grieving woman had explained that, although she was discharged the next day, her baby remained in hospital due to an infection. The 26-year-old said she was also told her baby needed antibiotic treatment for the infection.
The woman also recalled that after the child had received a dose of the medicine, she began to turn blue and was panting for breath.
Worried about the child’s welfare, the woman said she had raised an alarm with one of the nurses, who had asked her about the child’s color. According to the woman, she had explained to the nurse that it happened after the child had been given medication. The child was taken from her mother and rushed to a doctor, who examined her. After watching the doctor in action, the devastated woman said she was convinced something was wrong with her child. After waiting for some time, she and her husband were called downstairs to talk to the doctor. When they arrived, the woman said the doctor had told them the baby had died. It was also explained to the couple that the reason the child was rushed to the doctor was because she was not breathing and her lungs were found to be damaged. Attempts to resuscitate the child were futile, parents were told.
