Incorrect statements about AS pensions policy

DEAR EDITOR,

The University of Guyana Administration wishes to refer to an article published in the online edition of your newspaper on Sunday April 18, under the heading: “Why has the Government de-recognized my status?” The references made to the AS Pensions Policy are inaccurate and misleading and the University therefore kindly requests that withdrawal and correction be made accordingly. It should be noted that the University Pensioners’ signatories policy has been significantly improved and is now simpler, more acceptable and transparent. On this basis, we note the following in relation to the changes made on November 30, 2020 to the University Pension Policy and by extension, the Certificate of Life for Pensioners:

1. Amend the policy to include the use of the Senior Administrative Officers of the University of Guyana or a Justice of the Peace to sign as validators of the Vocational Certificates for Life, but only in cases where the pensioner is still employed at the University. .

2. Revise the policy requirements for Life Certificates from periods of 3 months to 6 months.

3. Receive electronic scanned or photocopied Life Certificates submissions for Pensioners still working at AS and who are known to exist.4. It should also be noted that, in some cases, at the request of AS Pensioners, University staff have made their way to a pensioner’s home to provide assistance and collect the Life Certificates.
See the link below to the interactive Life Certificate Statement for AS Pensioners: https: //uog.edu.gy/documents/ug-pension-scheme-life-certificate. It is hoped that your publication will take some urgent action to remove and correct the incorrect information now that the facts have been provided.

Truly,
Public Relations Unit,
University of Guyana
