Individuals who reclaim donated bail money are running around, invalid checks
– Police are blaming the re-staffing of the finance department

Glum is facing off yesterday at GPF’s finance department after cops told the group they may not be able to reclaim their bail money again.
Kaieteur News – People are again accusing the police of giving them a royal run around to reclaim their bail money. Others claimed that after months of being pushed around, they had received invalid checks, and the bank refused.
Yesterday, Kaieteur News met with these individuals standing in a line at Guyana Police (GPF) finance department based in Eve Leary.
The group of 30 people stood there in the compound eagerly for nearly two hours without officer supervision, only to be told that they may not be receiving any checks for the day.
They were also told that there is no guarantee that they will receive any checks today either.
Frustrated, the individuals protested and demanded clarification from the officials.
A woman said she was pushed around for more than 42 days before she finally received her check. She was relieved, but when the woman arrived at the bank to cover the check, she was refused.
“They told me it was invalid, and I said it was bouncing so I went back to Eve Leary and they said they have to come today at the age of two,” said the woman.
With a pale look on her face, she added “Now after two hours here in this line they say we will have to come back again.”
Four other people nearby said they also received invalid checks after being pushed around for months. They told Kaieteur News that the bank had told them there was an error in the checks and sent them back for correction.
Others were also quite annoyed and poisoned their frustration by demanding an explanation from the officials, saying they were fed up.
“Yall says we’re coming fuh this date and when we turn up now, they say we’re going to come back and come again … This is nonsense, yall must stop this insanity. We have left our job to come here only to waste money to collect free money, this is not right, ”they shouted to the officials.
To try to calm them down, two police inspectors – one of them a woman – came out to explain.
The rank told the group that the running around checks were invalid because the finance department had recently been re-staffed.
The female cop said the persons who signed the checks that have been rejected by the bank have been moved. He added that the checks will have to be re-issued.
With regard to the runs, he explained that the checks require two signatures before they can be issued.
“I’m the only officer in the department who currently has authority to sign these checks, and I’ve already signed them but they need another signature before they can be delivered.”
The female inspector continued “The only other person who can sign those checks is the Police Commissioner and is currently unavailable.”
He admitted that the group had been told to come today, but the Commissioner was caught at a meeting and could not guarantee when he would be available to sign.
