Seven-time All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge announced his retirement from the NBA yesterday following a health scare.
In a lengthy message posted to social media, Aldridge detailed how he played on April 10 with an irregular heartbeat. It was his fifth game with the Brooklyn Nets since he signed a free agent deal with the team.
He played 23 minutes and scored 12 points that night in a loss to the Lakers but continued to feel worse after the game. The Nets reported his symptoms the next morning, and the team immediately arranged for medical help for him.
“Even though I’m better now, what I was feeling with my heart that night was still one of the dreadful things I’ve experienced,” Aldridge, 35, said his farewell message. “With that said, I’ve made the difficult decision to retire from the NBA. For 15 years, I’ve put basketball first, and now, it’s time to put my health and my family first. “
The 6-foot-11 Aldridge became a free agent on March 26 after the San Antonio Spurs purchased the remainder of his $ 72 million contract. He immediately stepped into a starting role with the Brooklyn Nets, filling in for injured Kevin Durant.
“The Nets organization fully supports LaMarcus’s decision, and while we appreciate what he has brought to our team during his short time in Brooklyn, his health and well-being are far more important than the basketball game, ”Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement. “We know this wasn’t an easy decision for him, but after careful consideration and consultation with a number of medical experts, he made the best decision for him, his family and his life after basketball.”
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, Aldridge averaged 19.4 points and 8.2 rebounds over 1,029 career games (985 starts). Aldridge played for the Portland Trail Blazers (2006-15) before signing with the Spurs in July 2015.
He averaged 13.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 25.9 minutes in 21 games with San Antonio this season. “I’m grateful for everything this game has given me: the great memories, including all the bad and bad things, and the friendships I’ve made and will keep with me forever, ”he said.
