Mark Henry was charged with murdering a WCB pensioner

Mark Henry, Joel Henry’s brother and cousin to Isiah Henry – the two young people found murdered in the West Coast Berbice – appeared in Court today, to answer the charge of murder.

He is accused of stabbing Sooroojdeo Deochand, 68, to death on March 31, 2021.

When Henry appeared today in Court, he was not required to plead to the indictable charge and subsequently remanded to Prison.

Henry surrendered to the Police on Wednesday shortly after they issued a bulletin he wanted to arrest in connection with the murder.

Deochand’s loose body was found in his home last Tuesday with multiple stab wounds.

It was reported that a relative had gone to check on Deochand, who was living alone, after receiving information that he had been broken and needed to be taken to hospital to seek medical attention. When the relative arrived at the elderly man’s house, he called out to him, but there was no answer.

The woman then pushed the main door open and found Deochand lying in a pool of blood with several drops to his body. He was taken to his Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police later confirmed that there was one wound to the left side of his face, one to the back of his head, one to the side of his left hand, and one to the right that completely broke three fingers.

Deochand had been among a group of men initially arrested in September last year after the mutilated bodies of Isaiah Henry, 16, and Joel Henry, 19, were discovered in rural Cotton Tree, WCB – nearly two days after they left their Number Three Village home to pick out coconuts.

Since then, Henry’s brother Hencosey Henry has told detectives during interrogation that his brother confessed to killing the pensioner on March 30, 2021 at his Number Three Village home, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

He had detailed that he was at home when he received a phone call from his sister, who informed him that the suspect, Mark, was behaving in a disorderly manner. He was said to be “pelting bricks” in the house of the now deceased man.

As such, he faced his brother who at the time was armed with a heartbreak shouting “dem kill we brother and we’re not getting justice”.

The suspects allegedly assaulted his brother, but managed to pin him to the ground for a short time. The man managed to escape and ran to Village No. Four, WCB.

The brother further told the Police that after Mark ran away, he went to the home of the now deceased man where he saw blood on the ground.

Based on Police investigations, on the day in question, the suspect was accompanied by other drinkers, but left after spending some time.

Police investigations further revealed that around 17: 03h, Mark Henry returned to the drinking area wearing a pair of three-quarter blue pants and had a bare foot.

The pants reportedly had spots of blood while red sand was on his back and feet. At the time, he was armed with a 12-inch heartbreak with incised edges and shouted at the top of his voice, “I’m just cutting that one Sarjee … I’m cutting out his neck and face … he killed my brother and now I feel proud that I’m killing him now. ”
