A 59-year-old man is now dead after he was struck down and killed by a motor car driven by a drunk driver along the East Coast Demerara of the Nabaclis Public Road (ECD).
Deceased is Terry Straker of Lot 47 Nabaclis, ECD.
According to reports, at approximately 20: 40h on Friday night, a motor car, a PWW 6389 driven by a 48-year-old man from Golden Grove, ECD, was heading west along the south side of the allegedly speeding road. , when the accident happened.
The driver of the car, while driving on the Nabaclis Public Road, claimed to have seen Straker about 30 feet ahead of him and the man suddenly ran across the road and into the path of his vehicle. He claimed he applied brakes to avoid a collision, but the vehicle collided with a now deceased man.
As a result, Straker fell on the road and received injuries to his body. He was picked up in an unconscious state and transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver was later taken to police custody where he was subjected to a breath test. The results showed that it exceeded the prescribing legal limit. He was arrested and is assisting traffic ranks with investigations.
Only recently, another drunk driver collided with a canter who parked and injured a 43-year-old driver, Dharampaul Deonarine of Walton Hall, Essequibo Coast.
Police reported that a 22-year-old resident of Hyde Park, Parika, East Bank Essequibo, was proceeding along Parika Public Road when he allegedly saw a cow and swerved to avoid hitting her but instead collided with a truck motorist, who was parked that way.
He allegedly lost control of his car and also crashed into a pick-up vehicle parked on the west side of the road.
As a result of the collision, Deonarine, who was in the canter at the time he was struck, suffered injuries to his body.
He was picked up by public-spirited citizens and transported to West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was admitted. The 22-year-old car driver, who was found to be over the prescribed limit, was subjected to breathing tests.
