No deaths due to massive explosion at Trinidad gas works

(Trinidad Express) The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries says that at about 6:30 am yesterday, there was an incident at NiQuan Energy Trinidad Limited, Pointe-A-Pierre.

This was due to a component failure that resulted in a shot, the Ministry said in a statement.

There are no reports of casualties or injuries at this time.

The Ministry said the situation quickly came under control by members of Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services from Mon Repos Fire Station, along with NiQuan Land Managers and factory officials who are currently at the location.

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries is in regular contact with NiQuan officials and the public will be updated as more information becomes available.

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries is currently setting up a technical team to officially investigate the cause of the incident.

NO OPERATIONAL RISK

The Ministry of National Security also advises that the fire at the site is contained and that there is “no immediate operational danger to life or property in the vicinity”.

No injuries, or damage to State property were reported and the public is asked to seek an alternative route.

All traffic is diverted from the TECU building near the Guaracara River, and Flower Pot Beach near St Margaret’s Village.
