PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali has announced the reintroduction of the One Laptop for Every Family (OLPF) initiative.
The Head of State told Kato residents in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), on Tuesday, that the program will be restarted in 2021 with the goal of putting Guyanese at the same level as the rest of the technological world.
Publication of laptops would go hand in hand with internet access, which the President noted was earmarked for internal locations.
“Next year we will also be restarting the One Laptop for Every Family program to ensure that every child has the opportunity to not only be connected to the hub but has the tool through which they can pursue their studies.”
President Ali pointed out that technology was important in a developed world and that Guyana would not be left behind.
“The pandemic has taught us how important it is to keep up with technology … and we need to increase our investment to bring more technological access through our hinterland and riverine areas,” he said. The President, who had traveled to Kato to assess the needs of her residents, told the meeting that they will soon benefit from an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub.
“I am very happy to report to you that we will start building your ICT hub very soon and putting the infrastructure in that hub, so that you have access to good internet facilities and can access the opportunities that come with them. consequently. ”
The One Laptop for Every Family program was launched in January 2011 with the aim of providing ‘home’ Information and Communication Technology to tens of thousands of Guyanese families. (President’s Office)
