Palmeiras scored an extra-time winner to beat Santos inCopa Libertadores

BRENO Lopes scored the winner nine minutes into extra time as Palmeiras defeated his Brazilian club Santos in the Copa Libertadores final.

Substitute Lopes settled the match with a brilliant header from Rony’s cross in a thrilling climax to the final.

Played in a heatstroke in the Maracana, a game of little chance that sparked life when Santos coach Cuca was sent away four minutes earlier.

Palmeiras will now play in the Qatar World Cup in Qatar in February.

Sao Paulo’s only other victory in the competition – the equivalent of the South American Champions League – was in 1999.

Although fans were not allowed in the game, around 5,000 people were still present after being invited by the clubs, local authorities and South American governing body Conmebol.

The exhibition game was originally scheduled to be played on November 21 but has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Palmeiras won the Paulista state championship in August and played Gremio in the Copa do Brazil final in February. (BBC Sport).
