(Reuters) – The rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games European boxing qualifier will take place in Paris from June 4-8, says the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Boxing Task Force (BTF).
Paris replaces London, where the incident began last March before being halted in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. The BTF decided to move the event from London in January following a surge of cases in the country.
The BTF said that Paris was chosen “as part of its initial commitment to organizing its events in the recent or upcoming Olympic host countries, and because of the opportunity to continue to benefit from its already established relationship establish with the Local Organizing Committee, originally entrusted with organizing the now-canceled final qualifying match. ”
The BTF said last month that the world’s Olympic boxing qualifier, which was due to take place in Paris in June, had been canceled.
He insisted, however, that changes to the qualification system ensured that athletes from all regions had equal opportunity to qualify for the Games.
The BTF has been responsible for the qualifying matches and boxing tournament at the Tokyo Games after the IOC suspended the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Olympic recognition for its funding and governance issues.
