Prisoner found dead two days after being admitted to Lusignan prison – News Room Guyana

A remand prisoner from Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara, was found dead in his bed on Sunday morning by the duty officer.

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS), in a statement, explained that the officer on duty at about 06:00 was in the process of unlocking the prisoners for a shower when he saw the remanded prisoner, Roger Samuels lying on his bed mute.

Immediately, Doctor Britton and the Police Commander were informed of the situation.

An hour later, Dr. Britton examined Samuels and pronounced him dead. He was housed in unit # 1 along with seven other prisoners.

The prison service did not specify whether his death is being investigated as a murder.

According to the statement, Samuels was admitted to prison with several injuries to his body caused by the public as a result of the alleged crime he committed.

The police are currently investigating the matter.

Samuels, 44, of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was on remand for car larceny.

He was admitted to prison on January 08, 2021

The Prisoner Welfare Department is in the process of contacting the family of Samuels prisoners.

The body will be transported to Lyken Funeral Home pending a post mortem examination.
