QUALITY PVC PIPES INCLUDED TO NATIONAL STANDARDS
Kaieteur News – Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes are manufactured locally by two main entities. These companies meet National Standards specifications, and are certified by the Guyana National Standards Office (GNBS) to manufacture the product to a quality that meets consumer requirements when installing and using it.
The two National Standards, with which locally manufactured pipes comply, are the GYS 107, ‘Specification for pressure-rated PVC pipes (SDR series)’ and GYS 99, ‘Specification for PVC pipes 40, 80 and 120. ‘
The GYS 107 includes PVC pipes made in standard thermoplastic pipe dimension ratios and pressure rating for water. These standards include requirements, which include those for materials, test methods, workmanship, dimensions and burst weights. The GYS 99 also covers these requirements but is specific to PVC pipes made in Schedule 40, 80, 120 sizes and has a pressure rating for water.
The production of PVC Pipes, which meets these requirements, is essential to the end users or consumers. They expect that, once installed in their building, whether in a communal residence or production facility, pipes will fit properly and be durable enough to withstand the specified pressure for extended periods.
Poorly manufactured and installed pipes can lead to high replacement costs and a significant safety threat. Meeting standards and being certified under the GNBS Product Certification Program assures consumers of PVC pipes, which are quality assured.
Currently, there are PVC Pipes manufactured by Plastic Products Limited (Gafoors) and Guyana Thermoplastics Ltd. (Persieud Toolsie Group of Companies) is certified under the Product Certification Program (GNBS). The program aims to implement and monitor certification systems in industries to assure local and foreign markets that locally manufactured products comply with the requirements of the applicable Guyana Standards.
In the certification process, GNBS acts as an independent third party that allows manufacturers to apply the National Standards Mark to certified products. Annual re-certification based on audits and tests is carried out by GNBS to find out if standard requirements are being met.
Finally, GNBS is proud of the commitment shown by local companies to produce quality products, meeting the requirements of the National Standards. Other products currently certified to National Standards under the GNBS Product Certification Program are Gold Jewelery manufactured by Steve’s Jewelery and R. Sookraj Jewelers, and non-load bearing concrete hollow blocks manufactured by Gafsons Industries Limited . GNBS is encouraging more manufacturers to use standards to inform their production.
