Special Constable in hospital after being hit by a car; driver in custody

A female cop is in hospital with facial injuries after being hit by a motor car on Main Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice on Friday morning.

The accident happened around 07:00h.

According to police, a 21-year-old resident of the Mayor and Town Council Housing Scheme in New Amsterdam was driving the car while Special Constable Maricella Bruce, 48, of Tuckber Park, New Amsterdam, was on a bicycle at the time of the crash .

Constable Bruce is based at the Central Police Station and attached to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The motor car was reported processing east across Main Street, New Amsterdam when it collided with the cop who was heading south along the east side of that road.

As a result of the collision, Bruce collapsed on the road surface where he sustained facial injuries, above his right eye. She was picked up by the said driver in conscious condition and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient. Her condition is considered stable.

The motor car diver is currently in custody and the vehicle is stationed at the police station.

Investigations are still ongoing.
