Store at room temperature – Stabroek News

My fridge is full. It does double duty – not only for my perishability and things that are supposed to be in the fridge, but it acts as a storage facility. In my fridge you can find flour, pulses, baking powder, baking soda, yeast, various ground spices, long-life shelf milk in cans and cartons, nuts, pasta, specific oils, such as my toasted sesame oil and potatoes . Many of the items in the previous line, I never used to store in my fridge, but with the ground warming and average temperatures in the 90’s every day, I had no choice.

Room temperature is not a precisely defined term, it can range anywhere from 68 degrees Fahrenheit to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Here in the Caribbean, where average weather is 80 degrees Fahrenheit and above, this is especially problematic when it comes to storing and bringing cold or frozen things to room temperature. Goods and produce can spoil quickly, fruits ripen quickly, and things like butter and cheese can melt and turn to oil if not carefully monitored.
