Street sale to be regulated in Georgetown

Some of the vendors gathered in the forecourt of City Hall on Thursday, during a meeting with the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown.

Kaieteur News – The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) announced Thursday that it will regulate all street vending activities throughout the city.
This was announced by Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine during a meeting held with street vendors at City Hall compound. This meeting was held under the theme ‘Keeping sales neat, clean and organized.’
With the aim of regular sales, the Mayor said that the Council had a “moving policy, and a sales policy. So we’re moving to get that policy approved by the Council so we can start regulating vendors and arranging them the right way. “He added that this can hopefully be concluded before the end of the second quarter.
When the policies are approved, vendors will be registered and issued with a vendor ID card, which will have their adequate place number. In addition, the Mayor noted that sales will be done in different zones to ease traffic congestion in the city.
The Mayor also said collecting vendors, even though they have him on their side, doesn’t mean they can go out there and do as they feel. He encouraged them to adhere to the laws that govern the city.
It also asked retailers, particularly food vendors, to obtain their well-deserved documentation regarding food handling. The Mayor mentioned the recent inspection exercise that had taken place around the city, adding that several food vendors had been instructed to close their operations because they failed to provide a food handling certificate.
In closing, the Mayor urged the vendors to keep their environment clean and adhere to the COVID-19 measures outlined.
