The UAE duo imposed eight-year suspensions for repair efforts

DUBAI, (Reuters) – Former UAE captain Mohammad Naveed and batsman Shaiman Anwar Butt have received identical eight-year bans from a tribunal for violating the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption code, ‘ the governing body on Tuesday.

The independent tribunal was found guilty in January of trying to repair Twenty20 World Cup Qualification matches in UAE and failing to report corrupt methods to the anti-corruption officials.

Naveed was also found guilty of similar violations during the Emirates Cricket Board T10 League that year.

“Both had long international careers and were well versed in the threat posed by game repairers,” said Alex Marshall, General Manager of the ICC Integrity Unit, in a statement.

“They both chose to engage in this corrupt activity as a cynical betrayal of their posts, their fellow players, and all UAE cricket fans.

“I am pleased that the independent tribunal has imposed significant bans on all types of cricket and this should serve as a warning to any cricketer considering taking the wrong route.”

The bans are backdated to October 16, 2019, when they were suspended. (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty; editing by Christian Radnedge)
