Trinidad announces new COVID restrictions

(Trinidad Guardian) Health Minister Terrance Deyalsingh today announced the new public health restrictions of COVID-19.

Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s press conference, Deyalsingh said he had met government officials with Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley. He said he was authorized to put new restrictions in place by the Prime Minister.

The measures that will take effect at midnight tonight and end on May 16 are:

° No public gatherings for entertainment and concerts

° The public service will return to 50 per cent capacity on a rotational basis

° Places of worship will be reduced from 50 per cent capacity to 25 per cent capacity. Services will wait after 90 minutes

° Marriages and funerals will be limited to ten people.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds, warned citizens who are not adhering to newly announced COVID-19 regulations that they will “feel it in their pockets.”

He said he will meet with Police Commissioner Gary Griffith to ensure special teams of police officers are deployed to ensure COVID-19 regulations are enforced.

Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s press conference, Hinds said he would meet Griffith and his senior department heads.

“I give you the assurance that in meeting with the Commissioner and police departmental leaders in a very short time, I will share with them the team’s requests to ensure action is taken over the next three weeks , which is the life of these. new regulations to ensure that Trinidad and Tobago laws in this regard are properly followed and enforced, ”he said.

Hinds said he expects special teams from each of the nine police departments to monitor and enforce public compliance with all COVID-19 regulations.

“I will ask to report to this team on a daily basis their terms of activity in enforcing those regulations, where people will be made to feel it in their pockets if they practice the mindless behavior of disregard. safety and security of all. of us, ”he said.
