Two died early in the Home Stretch Avenue crash


Died, Dakera Gittens.

Kaieteur News – An early morning crash on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown, has left two young people dead, three in hospital and the 19-year-old driver in custody.
The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Tonika Halley, a step-mother of East La Penitence, Georgetown, and Dakera Gittens, 19, of Festival City, Georgetown. The injured residents were identified as: Delvern Luthers of Wortmanville, Georgetown; Joel Rose of Durban Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, and Troy Glen of Laing Avenue, Georgetown.
According to a police report, the accident happened around 00:30hrs on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown. The occupants were traveling in a 1289 PVV motor car.
The report noted that the teenage driver was heading west in the northbound direction of the road, apparently at a rapid rate when he lost control of the motor vehicle and crashed into a utility pole on the parapet before falling a few times and turn turtle in the nearby ditch.
Kaieteur News understands that passengers of other express vehicles have stopped to assist the car occupants, while others have alerted the police and ambulance.
The police report noted that individuals with a public spirit removed the occupants from the vehicle and rushed them to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Based on video footage seen in this publication, Gittens lay in the hay while his friends and other persons stood around him. One man can be heard saying, “The man is gone [email protected]* #%. “Followed by another man saying,” Nah, no, it’s good. “
Then a woman started calling his name, as she reached down and touched his face. The shirt Gittens was wearing was torn and bleeding, his hands had multiple cuts and he was panting for breath with blood rushing down the side of his face. The woman continued saying, “Dakera, Dakera,” and rubbed her cheeks.
In another video, some people near the corner of the trench were looking to see if anyone else was in the vehicle while police were investigating the scene and the Emergency Medical Technicians were preparing Gittens and Halley and others to rush them to the hospital.

Gittens reportedly died at the scene, and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, while Halley died while receiving medical attention. Their bodies were taken to Lyken Funeral Parlor, and are currently awaiting a post mortem examination.
Luthers, Rose, and Glen are still in the hospital receiving medical attention. Their condition is unknown.
The driver was subjected to a breathing test and no traces of alcohol were found in his system. The vehicle has since been delivered at East La Penitence Police Station, for inspection by a Licensing and Certification Officer, while the driver in custody assists with the investigations.
Relatives, friends and other individuals have taken to Facebook and other social media platforms to express their condolences and condolences to the Gittens and Halley families. They also extended prayers and wished the others still in hospital a speedy recovery.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
