Two women killed in separate accidents
Kaieteur News – Two women lost their lives this past weekend following separate accidents that occurred on the East Coast and East Bank public roads.
The latest death is the death of an 18-year-old Venezuelan national who was struck by a motor car early Sunday morning. The accident that took Nazaetlt Palacio’s life happened about 04: 000hrs along Prospect Public Road, Demerara East Bank.
According to police reports, the PTT3955 motor car driven by a 21-year-old man from Diamond, was heading to Georgetown on the west side of the public road when the young woman struck. Ronaldo Hussain claimed to have seen the woman running across from west to east on the road and ended up in his path just in the vicinity of the Biker Sports Bar. As a result of the collision, the 18-year-old was flown into the air before landing on the right of the car’s front window screen, before collapsing on the road some distance away.
Palacio who sustained injuries to her body was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Hussain was breath tested but no traces of alcohol were found in his system. He was taken into custody where he is assisting with the investigations.
Meanwhile, Miriam Johnson, 73, of the Eastville Housing Scheme, lost her life Saturday morning while trying to cross Annadale, Demerara East Coast Public Road.
Johnson was struck down and killed sometime around 06:00 hours while in the vicinity of Annadale market by a car driven by Danram Somwaru of 22-year-old Unity, East Coast Demerara.
The car was reported heading east along the north side of the public road, when Somwaru claimed the pensioner was running to his route.
The young man told police he observed the woman standing in the middle of the road while driving. Johnson ran across in his path where he collided with the left front side of his car. As a result of the hit, she fell on the road some distance away and sustained injuries to her body. The 73-year-old was aided by the people who witnessed the crash. Kaieteur News understands that she was picked up in an unconscious state and transported to the GPHC, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Somwaru also underwent a breath test but no alcohol was found in his system. He remains in custody, while investigations continue.
