A few days before Christmas, a family was sent into a state of mourning after a 55-year-old man was struck down and killed by a speeding car along Stewartville Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
Fifty-five-year-old Rajendra Doodnauth of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, was said to have been dragged some distance after the collision and died hours later while receiving medical attention on Monday.
Based on reports received, on the day in question at approximately 10: 40h, the motor car was proceeding east along the north side of the road, apparently at a rapid rate as the pedal cyclist now dead going in the same direction.
Doodnauth allegedly got off his bike and tried to cross the road when the front of the motor car came into contact with him. As a result of the impact, it was flown on the vehicle’s front window screen, and landed on the road surface where it was dragged some distance before the vehicle came to a stop.
He suffered injuries to his body and was taken into an unconscious condition and taken to Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty but subsequently died.
Devindra Doodnauth, the dead man’s son, told Guyana Times on Tuesday that he was at work when he received the terrible news. As he rushed to the scene, his injured father was already in hospital with a relative. The son noted that his father passed away shortly after arriving at the medical facility.
“I was at work and I get a call about a quarter to 11 that my dad is going to crash. When I leave work and go out there, the ambulance has already gone with him. So I go to the Cottage Hospital and they didn’t let me in to see him. My cousin was inside with him and a couple of minutes after, she comes out to tell him he died, ”recalled the son.
This announcement was told that the deceased was a former employee of the Uitvlugt Sugar Estate but had left the post some time ago. Since then, he remained unemployed. At the time of the accident, he was allegedly out buying something for identification.
“Someone sends him out to buy something because he went over the road and he was coming over. Maybe the car hit him while coming from Parika. The car struck him and dragged him back to Police. When they measure, they drag it about 90 feet. It was a distance. ”
In the meantime, his body was taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination while 41-year-old Non Pariel East Coast Demerara driver was taken into custody and assisting with the investigation. (Rupa Seenaraine)
