Get in trouble and kill: Dematnd ‘Aunty Dolly’ Dulmatie

Kaieteur News – A 59-year-old woman yesterday morning was struck down and killed while going to work by a Guyana Police (GPF) vehicle.
The incident happened on Nandy Park Public Road, East Bank Demerara, while the three-lane peak-time system was in place.
The dead woman is identified as Dulmatie Deochand named ‘Aunty Dolly,’ in Section ‘C,’ Block Y, Golden Grove, EBD.
According to information received, the accident occurred at approximately 07:26 hours.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman is going to her workplace, MS Hack & Sons Supermarket, which is a short distance from the pedestrian crossing.

Yesterday Guyana Police visited Deochand’s family.

Reports are that a minibus, PWW 7172, owned by the GPF, and driven by a police constable at the time, was heading north along the west side of the eastbound carriageway. At the time, traffic was transformed into a three-lane system heading into the city.
The incident would raise alarm bells for a similar accident not far away, a few weeks ago, where a man unaware of the three-lane system, walked in front of a truck and was killed.
A police constable told police he was driving at a slow rate when Deochand was seen approaching the pedestrian crossing. He further stated that as he was about eight feet away from the crossing, the woman had started crossing the road, at the pedestrian crossing. On seeing this, he allegedly tried to divert to avoid a collision, but the woman eventually struck.
As a result of the hit, Deochand collapsed. She was picked up in an unconscious state and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
The constable is currently in custody as the investigation continues.
Speaking to this announcement, the woman’s niece was concerned that her aunt suffered a broken neck, broken arm, bruises to her face and a hole was seen on the left side of her face.
The woman said that just the night before the accident, her aunt and three sons had visited them and they all laughed and had a great time.
She said the last conversation she had with Deochand was that she said she had to take time off work to do some hospital checks, because she wasn’t feeling well.
She described her aunt as a very active, quiet and helpful woman. Deochand leaves to mourn her four children and other relatives.
Yesterday, Police Commissioner (s) Nigel Hoppie, along with Division 4 ‘B’ Commander, Linden Islands, and other police members, also visited the woman’s family and assured them that a thorough investigation would be carried out and that no stone would be left unturned.
